within new technologies like AI and Big Data?<\/h2><p><strong>PF:<\/strong> \"For me, you can't separate humans and new technologies. This is the risk of what we call black boxes: <strong>we must not let the AI make all the decisions by itself<\/strong>There must be control at every stage. Both during the creation of the algorithms, to make sure it is not biased, but also after deployment,<strong> setting up actions and evaluations to monitor the functioning of the model and its consequences<\/strong>.<\/p><p>To take a well-known example, there were <strong>HR algorithms that disadvantage women or ethnic minority candidates with equivalent degrees<\/strong>. There are many such examples where a lack of control has induced biases, which initially come from humans and are systemic.<\/p><p>In health, we had the same kind of example with <strong>AI screening for a disease but starting from unrepresentative data<\/strong>This resulted in biased results for a certain class of the population. It's very simple, if in the dataset there are 60% of white men, but 5% of black women, the algorithm will be much more accurate and the model will be of better quality in its diagnosis for white men than for black women. All of this is to say that new AI technologies are not going to work on their own,<strong> you need humans behind it to control it and make sure the models are relevant. <\/strong>\"<\/p><p><strong>IH:<\/strong> \"For me, <strong>the human being is preponderant<\/strong>\u00a0We may talk about self-learning systems, but we are the ones who program, orient and, if necessary, create biases. This is why it is essential that <strong>everyone is concerned<\/strong> to give an opinion on what is done with the technology and even feel legitimate to contribute to it.<\/p><p>Typically, in the health care field, it is extremely<strong> important to include health care professionals<\/strong>They have to collaborate with those who develop new technologies. Health professionals have a different knowledge and education from the more \"tech\" profiles. This vision is very important because there is a culture of precaution, a true etiological knowledge, and a concern for the patient. Beyond health professionals, it is also <strong>I think it's important to include patients. <\/strong>On top of that, when you work with data, there is a part of creativity, <strong>you have to explore the data, make it talk<\/strong>. This is why it is necessary to have mixed teams that include people who are directly impacted by and familiar with the data being discussed, so in <strong>health care that includes patients and professionals<\/strong>\u00a0!<\/p><p>This is a trend that we are seeing develop little by little. More and more initiatives are emerging in this direction, for example the \" <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moipatient.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Me Patient<\/a> \"from the patient association <a href=\"http:\/\/www.renaloo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Renaloo<\/a> who have built a database made by patients for patients. Or medical schools that are starting to incorporate training on data use and programming. Its place as a beneficiary is therefore essential. To date, three models have emerged for its management:<\/p><ul><li>HIC: human in command<\/li><li>HITL : human in the loop<\/li><li>HOTL : human on the loop<\/li><\/ul><p>For health, the principle of prudence applies: HIC is the model to be favored in view of the level of maturity on the subject and the difficulties in predicting the consequences of solutions.<\/p><p>There are <strong>a real risk<\/strong> that the regulations we need are too slow to be put in place and that<strong> technology goes faster than humans<\/strong>. In fact, this is already the case and it is a risk that you find in all fields.<\/p><p>Look for example at the vapoteuses: there was a vacuum on the regulation, so the people who manufacture and distribute them have rushed into this breach. Today, there are vapoteuses everywhere. And it is retroactively that the health authorities are trying to understand their impact. Maybe in 5 years there will be a publication that will show that it is much more harmful than tobacco.<\/p><p><strong>There are examples, both contemporary, certainly unfortunately future, but also past<\/strong>. For a long time you had old advertisements about the benefits of radioactivity, saying that radioactive water was good for the body.<\/p><p><strong>The level of human knowledge evolves through time<\/strong>We have access to truths that are variable in time and also variable according to regions and cultures. This idea can be illustrated, for example, with the definition of truth given by Plank, whom I like very much: \" <strong>the truth is the idea that is shared by most people because its opponents have disappeared<\/strong>\u00a0\".<\/p><p>So yes, there may be a synchronicity between the emergence and availability of some innovative digital services via artificial intelligence and regulation.\"<\/p><p><strong>PF<\/strong>\u00a0At the moment I don't feel that there is much control in the development of artificial intelligence solutions. <strong>Apart from the RGPD, there is little guidance<\/strong> because these are new things, <strong>it takes time for legislation to be put in place.<\/strong><\/p><p>As far as human acceptability is concerned, there are certainly some people who are reluctant, but this is not a bad thing <strong>we should not do AI for AI's sake<\/strong>But we have to think about the consequences behind it. On the other hand, there are also a lot of fantasies between people who think that we will have autonomous cars tomorrow or on the contrary who think that we are going towards the Terminator. Both are completely imaginary, the reality is very far from it.<\/p><p>For now, <strong>the AIs we have created are very good at one task<\/strong>. For example, AlphaGo knows how to play go, it's very good, it's super strong, but beyond that it can't do anything. To go further, we have the so-called Transfer Learning techniques, that is to say a model that has learned from a certain database, and will be able to reuse this knowledge for other tasks. But these techniques are still in their infancy, and there is very little that is functional at this level today.<\/p><p><strong>This second article<\/strong> presenting the crossed views of specialists in health innovation highlights <strong>the central role played by the human being within the new technologies<\/strong>. In the <strong>medical field<\/strong>is all the people who are interested,<strong> health professionals as well as patients<\/strong>which must <strong>be included<\/strong> because of their preponderance in the field.<\/p><p>Beyond the place of man in technology, the emergence of<strong> Data Science raises issues of governance, responsibilities, and legislation<\/strong>. What are the <strong>the issues<\/strong>, <strong>the brakes<\/strong>but also<strong> opportunities<\/strong> to come in the future of data science in health?
